I've always been fascinated with beaded jewelry and beading in general. A few years ago I came across a pattern for a beaded necklace, made a few, and was also inspired by a dear friend who had been making some bracelets and necklaces. With her help I started buying beads and patterns and began to learn the various stitches.
I've gotten a few nice pieces in the past couple of years and am building up a fairly decent seed bead stash. The very expensive beads are on the back burner due to lack of funds. My current favorite stitches are both worked in the round, tubular herringbone, or ndbele, and cubic right angle weave.
Tubular herringbone is in all the magazine's basic directions, but cubic right angle weave directions seem to be a bit more elusive. I have to credit a couple of people for their very good instructions in this stitch. One is Heather Collins, of Dreamweaver Studios who has set up a very nice video tutorial, and has some wonderful patterns in the stitch. Another great inspirational lady for me was Nancy Dale, of NEDBeads. She did a nice tutorial on cubic right angle weave, not the basic stitch, but embellishing and using color.
There are literally hundreds of free tutorials on various beading stitches all over the web. I'm going to try to resurrect my old knit and spin links database and capture these sites.
