My storage system is inexpensive and works really well.
Like most knitters, I have an abundance, a plethora, of needles. Especially once I discovered circular knitting. Then I had to have various lengths and the matching dpn's. Storage became a real issue, and I tried and looked at a number of systems before I finally settled on this easy one.
For each needle size I had, I bought a zippered pencil case that can fit in a 3 ring binder. I marked each one with the needle size and put all the dpn's and circulars in that size in the case. It was obvious from the beginning they wouldn't all fit in any one binder so I found a basket large enough to hold them all. A shoebox would work as well, but I wanted something with a handle that I could tote from my work room upstairs to my downstairs knitting chair and back again.
One word of caution on the pencil cases. There are super inexpensive ones made of all vinyl/plastic, or the more expensive kind. I started out with the cheaper ones and found out the zipper openings were too short to get the needles in and out easily. So I found some canvas cases with see through front windows at almost $2.00 each. The zipper is the entire length and I can get all the needles in and out quickly without snagging or fear of breaking a double point. They are alot sturdier and stand up in the basket pretty well on their own.
What I really love about this system is that I can grab one case and have all my needles in that size ready for a project. On the afghans I've been knitting lately, I start out with dpn's or a short circular, and as it gets bigger I need to move to different size circulars.
It's really nice to have them all in one place ready to go.
